Nairobi National Park: the world's only safari on a capital city's doorstep

A one-of-a-kind national park

Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world located on the doorstep of a capital city. Established in 1946, it covers 117 km2 and is home to exceptional wildlife just 7 kilometres from the city centre. From Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you can reach the main entrance in under 30 minutes, making it an ideal excursion right upon arrival in Kenya.

Remarkable wildlife

The park is home to over 100 mammal species, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, zebras and wildebeest. It is also one of Kenya's most important black rhino sanctuaries, offering a rare opportunity to observe these endangered animals in their natural habitat. Birdwatchers will be delighted with over 400 recorded bird species, particularly between March and May when European migrants flock to the park.

How to plan your visit

Three options are available for exploring the park: a private vehicle safari, hiring a VIP minibus or taking the shared shuttle. Don't miss the Hippo Pools Nature Trail along the Mbagathi River, a ranger-guided walk that lets you approach wildlife on foot. The best time to visit is from June to October during the dry season, when animals gather around water sources and sparse vegetation makes spotting easier.

Practical tips

Allow at least half a day to fully enjoy the park. Arrive early in the morning to maximise your chances of seeing predators in action. The park is open daily from 6 am to 6 pm. Don't forget your binoculars, a hat and sunscreen. Picnic areas are set up so you can have lunch in the heart of the savannah with the Nairobi skyline as a backdrop, a truly surreal experience.
